A concealer, also known as a color corrector, is a cosmetic that is used to disguise dark circles, age spots, big pores, and other minor flaws on the skin. It's similar to foundation, but thicker, and it's used to blend different colors into the surrounding skin tone to mask imperfections. Concealer and foundation are commonly used to make skin appear more color-coordinated. Concealer is more strongly pigmented than foundation, yet both concealer and foundation come in a variety of opacities. Concealer can be worn alone or in conjunction with foundation.
It comes in a variety of forms, ranging from liquid to powder. Max Factor's Erace, released in 1954, was the first commercially available concealer.
Concealer comes in a wide range of colors. People tend to choose a concealer that is one or two shades lighter than their skin tone to disguise imperfections and dark bags beneath the eyes. Some hues are supposed to mimic the color of natural skin, while others are aimed to mask the color of a certain type of blemish. To conceal black circles, concealers with yellow undertones are employed. Red areas on the skin, such as those caused by pimples, ruptured veins, or rosacea, can be countered with green and blue. Sallow complexions can be brightened with a purple-tinted concealer.
